Overview
The UNESCO World Heritage Site, spanning 50,000 square kilometers, is home to the magnificent Selous Game Reserve, a popular tourist destination and natural system located in Tanzania’s southeast. The expansive plains, alluvial valleys, inselburgs that jut out, granite outcrops, and bodies of water comprise the strikingly beautiful terrain of the Selous Game Reserve.
The two main vegetation types that make up the Selous Game Reserve are savannah-wooded grasslands and miombo woodland vegetation cover, which is made up of tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannahs, and scrublands. These vegetation types include scrublands, savannahs, and tropical and subtropical grasslands. The reserve’s major animal inhabitants are these types of vegetation.
German governor of Tanganyika Herman Von Wissmann established the Selous Game Reserve as a protected area in 1896, during the German administrative rule in Tanzania. The reserve was inducted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

Mzizimia, Siwandu, Manze, and Nzelekela are some of the park’s other lakes.
Stiegler’s George.
With a depth of 100 meters, Stiegler’s George is yet another amazing sight in the Selous Game Reserve. Named for the German engineer who spearheaded and led the initial expedition, Stiegler. The gorge was called in honor of Stiegler because he was charged by an elephant and fell into the valley.
Selous grave.
The British explorer and conservationist Frederick Courteney is buried in the Selous cemetery in the Selous game reserve. Courteney was Cecil John Rhodes’ right-hand man during the annexation operations of Zimbabwe. A German sniper killed Selous on January 4, 1917, while he was battling the German colonial Schutztruppen in a bush war on the banks of the Rufiji River.
